RADNOR, PA — Avantor, Inc. (NYSE: AVTR) has been honored with a 2025 Edison Patent Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey for developing a biodegradable detergent designed to make viral inactivation safer and more sustainable in biomanufacturing.
The innovation, co-developed with Amgen, provides an alternative to traditional viral inactivation chemicals used in the production of monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and gene therapies. Avantor said the biodegradable detergent not only ensures effective viral inactivation but also protects protein integrity and improves process yield — a combination that addresses a long-standing industry challenge.
The technology offers biomanufacturers a compliant, high-performing solution that reduces environmental impact without sacrificing efficiency. The partners describe the advancement as a step forward in supporting next-generation biologics production with cleaner, more reliable materials.
