Dr. Lamont O. Repollet is a nationally respected education leader, public administrator, and published author with more than three decades of experience spanning the full education continuum from pre‑kindergarten through postsecondary education. As the first Black president of Kean University, New Jersey’s Urban Research University, he leads a diverse, majority‑minority institution of nearly 19,000 students with a rapidly expanding global presence. Under his leadership, Kean has strengthened its national profile, increased research productivity earning R2 Carnegie designation, boosted student success outcomes, expanded workforce partnerships, and led the first merger of two public institutions in New Jersey history, positioning the University for long‑term growth and innovation.
A champion of equity, access, and academic excellence, Dr. Repollet has launched initiatives that expand opportunity and drive institutional change. His leadership has strengthened Kean’s research enterprise, broadened global education pathways, and connected students to high-demand careers. His commitment to social mobility has helped establish Kean as a leading engine of economic and educational opportunity.
Before assuming the presidency, Dr. Repollet served as New Jersey’s first Black Commissioner of Education, overseeing the nation’s top‑ranked public school system and managing a $12.3 billion budget across more than 2,400 schools. He guided the state through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID‑19 pandemic, shaping policy frameworks for remote learning, operational continuity, and equitable access to high‑quality instruction.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Repollet distinguished himself as a superintendent, principal, and teacher, driving significant gains in graduation rates and reducing dropout rates in underserved communities. A sought‑after speaker and advisor, he has served on state and national education boards, earned numerous awards, and is an active member of Sigma Pi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma.
